KAFFIYEH!

From Paris to London to New York, and back to Dublin, I noticed this ubiquitous accoutrement, the Kaffiyeh, which has been gaining 'mem[e]ntum' among young men internationally. With its charged history spanning this century's track of colonialist enterprises, it promises to embed itself and it's ideas like every Buddhist archetype exported from east to west trough the plight of Tibet under Chinese occupation.

Curiously, I heard that versions of this loaded symbol are actually fashionably and readily available at Urban Outfitters. My first thought when realizing the volume –and power, of this iconic dispersion was the idea of a quiet victory for Arafat... but could the same victory be fated to one such that fellow Che?

The history of the use of the kaffiyeh in the struggle for justice in Palestine demonstrates why it has become a symbol for all people who struggle for unity against colonial occupation and oppression around the world.

In the early 1900s, the British occupied many countries in the Middle East, including Palestine. The Palestinians strongly fought against British occupation by uniting. They used all forms of resistance. [more]

SIGNAL-TO-SCREEN

I imagine people in the future looking at the representations of ourselves in wonder, trying to decode just what kind of messages were being traded, but most curiously they will probably wonder at the mysterious, yet ubiquitous cast of blue we wore on our faces.

HI'ART: DE-CLOTHED

Bailey is originally from Huntington Beach, California...lives in New York city...just completed his first feature film "Daniel Jones" visible on his 'myspace' page...loves the word thing... and certainly has a sensibility to light and color tonality harking back to the 1970's self-portrait Polaroids of Mark Morrisroe with a tad of Joel Peter Witkins' own cool somberness.

Bailey explores the potential of his own sensuality by opening a dialog with the viewer that questions the real intentions in 'looking'. Whether it is actually a dialogue or simply brushing the social veneer that only greases the cogs of sexual desire while approaching his work. This ballad with the social travails of allure and deflection, picks up where Nan Golding's own stops. Realness in Bailey's photographs is not in "
memory and as an invocation of the color, smell, sound, and physical presence, the density and flavor of life" but in depicting the transcient value of a sexual object's allure to his beholder. By unapologetically propping his sexualized self-portraits in a photo stage, he questions that social dialog in his photo-monologues which are expanded uponin his blog/diary entries.
I'm pleasantly perplexed at the iconic milage of a well chosen pair of stylish socks.

FLASHER: chadalan07

This gallant and chivalrous flasher literally manages to take us out of 'his' closet and into the sunset with a simple trigger of the shutter.

FLASHER: ANON000113

This anonymous flashers definitely know their worth in lines and angles. By tilting the camera and slightly leaning the slender figures diagonally over the dominant, suburban lines of the background, they achieved near perfect triangulations in the compositions –and no parallels. The figure-ground tension of these fine curves against the dominant, wall-papered lines lean towards a quasi-op art effect. The dirty specks on the mirror's surface are classic, visual shutter climax framing what some brawny French man once called the 'punctum', but otherwise stealing away from a near-perfect nipple-to-arm-pit ratio or a perfect tangent on the central curve.

MAXWELLT

The frame is pushed here by Max's insertion of the cinematographic borders within the confines of his own photographic field of vision. This effect brings a blurred ambiguity of the space he inhabits and that implied by the projection, making the shadow Max assert more presence in the diegetic space than the man himself. Nice job.
